Recycled nylon

Nylon is one of the strongest and most durable fibres available. It’s also very soft and has a natural look and feel. Nylon allows us to design and produce garments with an extended lifecycle that you will be able to wear many times over.

The challenge for a brand like FIG Clothing, committed to minimizing our environmental impact, is that nylon is a petroleum-based material with a negative environmental footprint and is not easy to recycle.

Eco-friendly solutions to nylon have been difficult to source since recycling nylon has been a technological challenge in the past. Its availability is almost inexistent, unlike polyester which is also a petroleum-based material, but much easier to recycle.

However, more environmentally friendly sources of nylon have been recently developed through advances in technology – it’s now possible to obtain recycled nylon made from per-consumer material. This material comes from industrial processes and includes scraps and excess material from factories that would otherwise be downgraded or sent to a landfill. Because this alternative to regular nylon is more sustainable and better for the environment, we have incorporated it into some of our styles in the fall/winter 2021 collection.

Unfortunately, recycled nylon is not yet accessible enough, which is why it’s difficult to incorporate more of it in our collection. We are committed to continuing our efforts to find more environmentally friendly alternatives to regular nylon and are working in partnership with our yarn suppliers to increase our use of recycled nylon in the coming seasons.
