We believe it is our responsibility, as a Montreal, Quebec and Canadian brand, to play an active role in the local garment industry. Several manufacturers have been with us from the start; they are an extension of the FIG family.
New international manufacturers have recently joined the FIG family. They share our values and our commitment for quality, and have become indispensable allies.
9) WHAT MAKES A GARMENT UV PROTECTIVE (UPF 50)?
UPF stands for “ultraviolet protection factor”. The highest rating is UPF 50 +. It is the density of the weave that allows the fabric to block UV rays. A dense and tight construction reduces the space between the threads, and limits the amount of UV light that is able to go through the fabric. No chemical treatment is added to the clothes. It is also important to know that a wet or stretched out garment is not as effective against UV rays. To find a sun protective garment on our website, use our Sun Protection filter.
10) WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF ORGANIC COTTON?
Organic cotton grows from non-genetically modified plants. Using organic cotton allows us to reduce our environmental footprint and contributes to the protection of the planet. The absence of pesticides and chemical fertilizers in the organic cotton culture reduces the quantity of chemicals that pours into our rivers. Organic cotton presents advantages for consumers as well, since it helps reduce the amount of chemicals in contact with the skin. The organic cotton industry is also regulated by strict laws that enforce fair wages and the fair treatment of workers in the supply chain. Certain items in our SAFARI collection are made with certified organic cotton.
11) WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF THE PONTE DI ROMA FABRIC?
Ponte di Roma is a stretchy, flattering, antistatic and wrinkle-resistant fabric that retains its shape between washes due to a tight knit. Wash it as much as you like, bundle it up in your suitcase, wear it on the go: the Ponte is super resilient. Its subtle sheen also gives it a chic look that is perfect for travelling, for work and for day-to-day life. Buying a garment that is durable is a step in the right direction to reduce waste. So buy less, but buy better; ) Items made from Ponte di Roma can be found in our VOYAGE collection.
12) WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF TENCEL® ?
TENCEL® is an eco-friendly material, produced by Lenzing, in Austria. Our 100% TENCEL® woven fabric is silky soft, moisture wicking, keeps you cool and dry and naturally reduces bacteria formation and odours. Its fibre, lyocell, is made from the pulp of eucalyptus trees that grow on FSC® certified farms, a renewable and sustainably managed resource. Moreover, Lenzing uses a closed loop process to produce TENCEL®, which lowers its environmental impact and makes it possible to recycle close to the totality of the solvent and water used to transform wood into textile. Items made from TENCEL® can be found in our METRO, SAFARI and VOYAGE collection.
13) WHY CHOOSE MODAL LUX?
For three simple reasons: it is eco-friendly, ultra soft and made for summer. Modal® is made from beechwood pulp, and produced by Lenzing, an environmental leader in the textile industry. 50% of the wood used in the production process is sourced in Austria, while the other half comes from neighbouring countries. Moreover, Modal® is made through a closed loop process: around 95% of the materials used to produce this fibre are recovered, which makes for a small environmental footprint. Modal® fibres are incredibly fine and supple, which makes for an extra soft thread. The presence of Modal® in our fabric contributes to its softness. In addition, our Modal Lux is cool on the skin, controls moisture and offers optimal solar protection (UPF 40), making it ideal for summer! Items made from TENCEL® can be found in our SAFARI collection.
14) WHY CHOOSE OUR ECO-POLY BLEND?
Because it’s perfect for the beach AND eco-friendly!
Our eco-poly blend is composed of recycled polyester (45%) made from post-consumer plastic bottles. On average, each garment is made with approximately 20 plastic bottles, that have been shredded, transformed into a yarn and weaved. This process makes for a strong and durable material, but most importantly, it gives a second life to products that were discarded as waste. This fabric is quick-drying, wicking and offers UPF 50 + solar protection – hence perfect for the beach! Contrary to many polyester-based fabrics, it is supple and soft, and feels just like cotton! Items made from our eco-poly blend can be found in our OCEAN collection.
15) WHAT DOES BLUESIGN® MEAN?
bluesign® is an independent organization active in the textile industry. Its mission is to eliminate substances posing risks to people and the environment in the textile supply chain. A garment, a fabric or a manufacturer can be certified bluesign®. At FIG, one of our key fabrics is bluesign® certified: the Flex fabric from our SAFARI collection. To learn more about bluesign®, visit their website!
16) WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF THE FLEX FABRIC?
FIG went on a mission to create the ultimate adventure travel pant for women, a pant technically designed for long treks, but also ideal for everyday use. So was born the Flex bottoms program: total versatility with a sleek and modern design, a flattering fit and undeniable comfort. Our Flex fabric is made from nylon and spandex. It is extremely durable and stretchy. It is also quick-drying, takes very little space in the backpack, does not wrinkle and offers UPF 50+ solar protection. As an added bonus, the Flex fabric is Bluesign® certified, which guarantees the absence of toxic products in its composition and its fabrication process.
17) WHAT DOES RDS MEAN?
RDS stands for Responsible Down Standard. It is an independent, voluntary global standard that ensures the ethical treatment of animals and traceability in the down supply chain. All of our insulated jackets are made with RDS certified down. It’s our way of supporting the best animal welfare practices possible. To learn more about the certification, visit http://responsibledown.org/.
18) WHAT IS FILL POWER (FP)?
Fill power is a rating that allows us to measure the loftiness of down, by determining the number of cubic inches one ounce of down will occupy in cold temperatures. For example, if one ounce of down takes up a volume of 700 cubic inches, it is given a 700 fill power rating. The higher the number, the greater the loftiness capacity. A higher rating means that the down “lofts” more: it occupies more space and traps more air, which makes for a more efficient insulation!
19) WHAT IS A C6 DWR?
It is a short chain durable water repellent treatment to keep rain and snow out of a garment’s surface. This particular treatment qualifies as eco because it is less damaging to the environment than conventional C8 DWR treatments. Its components are less toxic and decompose faster in the environment. This is the best option on the market at the moment, one that offers a high degree of performance, and above all durability. Although this product is not perfect, we must remember that a long-lasting garment is also a way of minimizing our impact on environment.
